*Hey Makers! This is what we're all about:*
*What: Learn to Solder with DW, James, and Andrew*
We'll be learning from scratch how to solder. What is "soldering" you
ask? It's the joining of two metals (often wires) with a filler metal
using heat. Soldering is used to attach electronic components (like
resistors) to printed circuit boards. It's also a very handy skill for
fixing a loose wire on a toy or wiring on your car, and the same
principles apply soldering copper pipes in your home's plumbing or
soldering the copper foil on stained glass projects. If you are an
absolute beginner, we want you.
This meetup will be light on theory and heavy on doing. Here's the plan:
1. 10-minute intro to your tools and materials + mention of safety
(hot end/cool end of tools and the importance of eye protection and
fresh air)
2. Soldering two wires together (x3)
3. Build a small blinking LED kit so you have something to take home.
The safety gear listed below is non-optional --without it we will send
you down the road to Canadian Tire --so be sure to check your list. All
questions and RSVPs to DW <mailto:dw at kwartzlab.ca>.
*When:* Saturday, August 22, 2009 10am to noon -- rain or shine, we'll
be in my spacious, bright and well-ventilated garage.
*Why:* because once you know how to solder you can make secure
electrical connections by doing more than just twisting wires together
and wrapping them with tape. And it's a rite of passage in Makerdom.
*Who:* happy, constructive, curious people 19 years old and over (we'll
have a kid's event in the future once we see how this one goes).
Observers will be welcome at a future event. For this one we need the
doers.
*Where:* DW's place, 396 Cavendish Dr, Waterloo, ON - street parking
