*SO Scifi is the Southern Ontario Science Fiction Festival being held
September 7th and 8th in it’s inaugural year of 2012. Celebrate your love
of science fiction by attending science fiction movie screenings (Contact,
Serenity, and Wrath of Khan) and Star Trek Day KW all being held at the
original Princess Cinema uptown Waterloo. To honour the connection of
science fiction and science fact, short introductions discussing the
science behind each scifi movie shown!
On Saturday Sept. 8 from 12-5 there will be scifi festivities at uptown
Waterloo public square with costumed guests, information booths (including
Kwartzlab!), and fun activities for everyone.  Enjoy the music of Sean
Pinchin while you get your pictures taken with Daleks and Klingons! Special
guests: the Armchair Directors will be recording an episode as well so come
meet our favourite local movie reviewers! *

SO Space is the Southern Ontario Space research and technology festival and
is a non-profit educational event being held on Sunday Sept. 9 from 12-5 at
Kitchener City Hall.
There will also be many activities for families and children to enjoy at
City Hall! Come participate in the Starlab display hosted by The Museum,
astronomy activities hosted by the Laurier Centre for Women in Science,
NASA produced video games, displays and activities from the UW Earth
Sciences Museum and the Centre for Planetary Studies and Exploration from
the University of Western Ontario! Information booths will also be on
display regarding Yuri’s night, Nerd Nite, the Planetary Society, and local
maker-space Kwartzlab!
Guest speakers include: Major Jeremy Hansen courtesy of the Canadian Space
Agency, Melissa Battler from the Centre for Planetary studies at the
University of Western Ontario (speaking at 3:30pm), Leif Bloomquist from
MDA (speaking at 1:45), Dr. Danya Hudson from COM DEV (speaking at 12:15),
and Dr. Michael Balogh from the University of Waterloo  (speaking at 1:00).
Tickets are just $5 per adult and kids under 12 are free.
In the evening of Sept. 9 starting at 7:30pm, there will be a “meet the
scientist” social event at the Rum Runner pub in Kitchener where members of
the public can interact with members of the science community in a social
setting.
