Doc's offhand comment about IBM and hexadecimal notation piqued
my curiosity. Having done my CS degree when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and
IBM ruled the dinosaurs, I nonetheless believe that IBM's relationship to
hex is only slightly more central than Al Gore's relationship to the
internet.
Of course I turned to Wikipedia to see how much I might be missing.

Lots of interesting esoterica like finger-counting system that works up to
to 1K-1 attributed to Arthur C.Clarke and even some droll hexadecimal
humor. Some useful stuff that never made it into CS curriculum but perhaps
should have as well.
