mbed is pretty good for rapid development. I think you just need to add a magjack for ethernet.

Subject: [KwartzLab] Net-connected uC that can send email?
A friend has asked me to look into setting up a small alarm monitor. When triggered (just a simple logic level) it would connect via the house's Internet connection to send an alert by email or text. I agreed enthusiastically, thinking that there must be a microcontroller solution (arduino plus Ethernet shield, parallax spinneret, mbed) that could do the job, but I'm finding precious little info or projects so far. I really want to avoid setting up a separate web server to do the emailing!
Any help would be appreciated!
