[KwartzLab] Net-connected uC that can send email?

I've been looking more at
the mbed, I don't think you even need a special ethernet jack.  From
what I've read you just need a plain old RJ45 and it will take care of
everything.

I also found some source code (a "hello world" for sending
email) on the mbed site:
http://mbed.org/users/segundo/programs/SMTPClient_HelloWorld/lslvmo/docs/main_8cpp_source.html

It looks like it would work, as long as I can find a mail server that supports simple authentication.

One other candidate is this nifty device: http://supermechanical.com/twine/

It doesn't get much simpler.  It costs more, but not that much
more - consider $65 for an mbed, plus the cost of the jack and power
connector and case, it approaches the $100 TWINE, so it may not be worth it to bother with a DIY approach (especially when I've got other stuff
I'd rather be building...)  Of course, the TWINE connects through a web
service so I'd be tied to that, but at least it's (presumably) free.

When triggered (just a simple logic level) it would connect via the house's Internet connection to send an alert by email or text. I agreed enthusiastically, thinking that there must be a microcontroller solution (arduino plus Ethernet shield, parallax spinneret, mbed) that could do the job, but I'm finding precious little info or projects so far. I really want to avoid setting up a separate web server to do the emailing!
