I wouldn't quite say it's a sham. It is not too difficult to detect
suspicious voting by all but pretty sophisticated mechanisms. That said,
it's definitely possible to manipulate the results, but letting 'known
experts' do the voting can make the public just as unhappy, since they'll
feel slighted and that the judges weren't fair.
I'm not certain there's a great answer either way. Regardless, this is a
bit tangential to the subject at hand. :)
