I found a suitable lamp in one of my junk bins for the illuminator and installed it last night.
I'm not sure it is exactly the correct lamp; it would appear that any 12-volt 2-pin single-filament bayonet-base lamp will fit, and the brightness would vary with the lamp wattage, but it is not clear which wattage is appropriate. This type of lamp is used in automobile tail lights (when separate from turn signals) and back-up lights.
The pins in the socket have lost some of their spring so I had to build up the solder blobs on the lamp terminals to make contact.
So now maybe you'll be able to see something in the microscope.
