Hey All,
Every year, the Thiel Foundation gives 20 people under the age of 20
financial support to spend 2 years working full time on awesome
projects. (Also mentorship, networking, speaking opportunities, and a
community of other really awesome people in your age group.)
Applications for the next round just opened:
http://www.thielfellowship.org/apply/ .
I've had the good fortune of being selected for the newest class. It's
allowed me to spend full time working on my projects, meant I don't
have to spend time worrying about how to stay afloat, made it socially
acceptable for me to do cool things instead of going to University,
and generally been an utterly amazing opportunity.
I expect that there are lots of really awesome potential applicants in
our communities who would really like to know about the application.
Personally, I've been around hacklab.to since I was 15. I'd really
encourage people to circulate this information around the hackerspaces
they are involved in. There are people in your community who could
really benefit from this knowledge, I think.
It's worth noting that most fellows didn't expect to get in, or even
as far as the finalist round. I certainly didn't. I'd encourage you to
apply, even if you don't think you are likely to get in. The
opportunity cost is just a few hours of time and the opportunity is
really awesome. And even if you don't get in, there are a bunch of
neat opportunities during the application process.
Also, please feel free to contact me (chris at colah.ca) if you're
considering applying, especially if you're involved in a hackerspace
-- I'm happy to answer questions, even if I kind of suck at responding
to emails promptly.
Best Wishes!
Chris Olah
