Hello fellow Night\Shifters,
It's hard to land on the right words to describe what happened on Saturday
night. We all came together and carved a tremendous new shape into our
community. I've lived downtown for only a couple of years and spent time in
K-W as uWaterloo student years ago, but the streets and spaces we remixed
were like I'd never seen them during Night\Shift.
The festival's organizers bet heavily on the assumption that there was a
huge appetite for this kind of nocturnal event in Kitchener and Waterloo
Region. We believed locals would be all over the idea of exploring new
possibilities in their built environment, and that they too had an inkling
of the creative forces that dwell here — plus a craving to see what happens
if you give those two elements more room to overlap and intertwine. I
couldn't have asked for a better payoff than the few thousand people who
bundled up to wander around on Nov 2nd. I also couldn't have asked for
better partnerships than the ones I found in all of you. It's because of
the fabulous possibilities that you all imagined — and brought to such
vivid life! — that we were able to pull this off in only a few months'
Thank you so much for stepping up and donating your creativity, energy and
faith to the concept of a nuit blanche for downtown Kitchener, and for
responding so immediately with your support and collaboration. The
inaugural festival was an incredible success, and we have the social media
evidence to prove it.
Speaking of which: We've been collecting links to media coverage, photo
galleries and videos in a Google Doc, which is publicly editable, so feel
free to add links (
Please continue sharing your Night\Shift experiences on
(@NightShiftWR or @AlternativesJ) and post with the hashtag
#niteshift13 to help us keep track of all the footage and reactions. That
will also help us pull everything together on Storify. Likewise, we'll be
rolling out our own video coverage piece of the festival sometime in the
coming weeks, so stay tuned for that.
We've also got a follow-up blog
a feedback form <http://nightshift.alternativesjournal.ca/feedback/> on the
Night\Shift website. We'd appreciate it if you can share both of those
widely. We will pass on any relevant feedback to you as it comes in.
I'm also happy to report that the A\J team have already (secretly) begun
saying the words Night\Shift 2014! Once our energies return and we're
capable of having conversations that contain full sentences, I'll share
some more details, and likely check in again soon for specific feedback.
In the meantime, I'll look forward to catching up with everyone in the
coming weeks and months and hearing more about your Night\Shift memories.
Many, many, so many thanks again for helping make this daydream into a
And now, I sleep.
PS: If you are the point person for an organization, a business or a large
group of festival participants — or you just want to make sure someone sees
this email — please pass it on.
