Darin has mentioned the BOX Art Show at 41A Ardelt this weekend.
But there's some really interesting stuff going on behind the scenes.
For most of this year, Ron Doyle, the owner of the 41 Ardelt industrial
complex, has been working on a plan to convert the compound from an
industrial space to a cultural space. This is a huge space, with multiple
buildings, and about 100,000 sq ft.
Mark Pitcher and I got ourselves invited onto the planning committee, as
Kwartzlab representatives. The early plan, up to about September, was to
create an arts, culture and event space, called the Ardelt Art X-Change.
And all along, there was discussion about how Kwartzlab could be involved.
They even produced a floor plan showing the future location of Kwartzlab,
although Mark & I made no commitments. It's nice to be popular, though.
In September, we pitched a proposal to change the focus of the new facility
from "arts & culture" to "maker culture". I argued that we are on the cusp
of an important cultural change, as maker culture, 3D printers and
"boutique manufacturing" are ushering in a second industrial revolution.
It seems that the sales pitch was effective. The design and consultation
process is being run by Shelley Adams at CEI, and she just told me that the
"maker space" concept is the current favourite, and that some sort of
announcement or public meeting about this will be coming December 11. I
talked to Ron Doyle, the property owner, and he confirmed this, and is
starting to act on the plan. He's already brought in a blacksmith as a new
tenant, and is bringing in a woodworker who makes musical instruments.
There's some stuff happening Saturday at the BOX art show that are paving
the way for the forthcoming announcement:
* 11:30am-12:45pm: "Manufacturing in a Knowledge Driven Economy"
A panel discussion that will examine changes from traditional to advanced
manufacturing. Panelists from Conestoga College, Waterloo Accelerator
Centre, and local advanced manufacturing companies.
* Afterwards, a tour of the Double R Steel plant next door. Think about
what you would like to see in the next version of Kwartzlab's heavy lab as
you do the tour, because these guys have some nice toys.
