The VeloCity Foundry is a new makerspace opening in Kitchener next spring,
with 20,000 sq ft, and all the tools. It will serve as a startup
accelerator for hardware companies (think Thalmic Labs or Voltera). I heard
it will be located at the old Manulife building near the Kitchener market.
"VeloCity Foundry will be focused primarily on supporting entrepreneurial
students from the University of Waterloo's mechatronics, nanotechnology,
electrical, mechanical, chemical and other engineering programs who
are developing physical products for commercialization with potential
positive impacts on the manufacturing industry."
"VeloCity Foundry will provide more than five new engineering startups with
many aspects of VeloCity's current entrepreneurial programming, including
workspace, seminars and mentorship, plus free access to machinery, tools,
and prototyping equipment; and testing, wet lab and assembly space."
Bud Walker from UW is leading the project. Some people may remember that
Bud visited Kwartzlab Nov 2012, and announced that he was going to create
some sort of student makerspace at the U of W.
I've heard nothing yet to suggest if there will be public access to the
tools at this new MakerSpace. If anyone has inside information, I'd love to
hear more details.
