I'd like to bring a few of my children - Pablo, Salvador and the cannibals - they can be on their own sculpture stand if someone could help me for 1/2 hr with a vehicle. Or they can be on a table with other people's projects. They don't need much space - actually, some dark corner would be perfect. I'll bring a power bar for them - need an outlet nearby.
I can't be there myself except to setup, hopefully around 6pm, because I'll be at Strange Utopia with Pixle and Binary Forest. Speaking of which, can I borrow the big orange ladder from the lab at the same time, and is there a way to transport the ladder and Pablo (in her 5' box) from the lab to downtown ?

Subject: [KwartzLab] kwartzlab at Night\Shift: call for volunteers/projects!
I've taken the lead on wrangling up some people and projects to show off at this Saturday's Night\Shift event. This is a fantastic opportunity for kwartzlab members and friends to be involved in a really cool public community event.
Doug, Bernie and I met with Eric Rumble (organizer) and checked out the space they found for us. We'll be at the Public Utilities Building ground floor. It is located directly across from Kitchener City Hall (big grey stone building on the corner). A prime location!
The space is huge! We will be sharing it with Weird Canada who are bringing in 5 live bands who will likely take up a good chunk of the front space. There will also be some other projects being installed by people that Eric is bringing in.
I took a bunch of photos for you to get a sense of the space. See attachments.
The last two photos are of a room that I feel would be perfect as a SoOnCon overflow space that attendees can come back to hang out and keep hacking on their badges. But we of course are not limited to this space, and we want a kwartzlab presence out in the front room as well. The advantage to the backroom would be getting away from the live music, and having a chance to have conversations.
The initial idea was that kwartzlab would set up a "pop-up makerspace", and have it run like a TON where people are working on projects and doing cool things. Think of it as an opportunity to get work done, but socialize with the KW community (and would expose us to folks who don't usually come out to a TON, or even know about kwartzlab).
Some things I think would be awesome to see:
people running the 3d printers, and bring examples to talk abouta stitch and bitch corner where people can come to work on their spinning, weaving, knitting, crochet, needlepoint...we have supplies for a pom-pom make and take
interactive projects made by members...or just things for display
Someone could be making something with the sewing machines
a soldering section for badge hackingDoug's liquid nitrogen icecreamRyan hammering on metalDavid sculpting his goblin head
I will be running a paper banner make & take with In Paper Dreams, and have a photo booth set upAny additional ideas are most welcome!
The event runs from 9 pm - 3 am. It would be awesome if you are available to stay the whole time, but if you can only put in a limited shift, please let me know.
Ideally we'd like about a dozen reps from the lab helping with our station.
I know this is all last minute, but would really appreciate it if people are able to step up and commit to participating in some portion of the night!
Tables and chairs will be provided by the city, I need to let them know by tomorrow how much we need. I was thinking 20 chairs and 8 tables. I also need to send out a blurb of the activities that will be happening so the sooner I hear, the better advertising we will get.
Please message me asap if you'd like to be involved!
